Southland National Party senator Brett Mason is to step down from the Senate after 13 years of service.


The Liberal MP said his role in Southland, where he was first elected in 2011, was to champion the interests of workers and communities.


"It's the job of everyone to speak truth to power," he told the National Party media conference today.


"No matter how high office is up there, if they don't share you or share their community you are not accountable."


Mr Mason said he would not retire as minister of transport because he didn't believe the role was appropriate for someone with such a high-profile position.


"The job of a minister isn't to make it look easy or to make everyone happy," he said. "I just feel that it's just too difficult."


Mr Mason said he had been an active member of the Southland community since he first entered Parliament in 2011 and his family was proud to be the state's fourth senator, having been born and raised in the region.


"Southland has been a tremendous part of me and the rest of New Zealand," he said.


He said he believed Southland's "economic and cultural heritage" was at stake if the Northern Territory were to declare independence from Australia.


"The Northern Territory is a long way from the South," he said.


Mr Mason said he respected the views of Mr Abbott and other Labor politicians, who have expressed support for a separate state or separate country on the basis of the Constitution.


"We may disagree about our politics, but I hope the people of Southland will get the support they need to remain part of their community," he said.


"I think if they do want to have their own place then maybe that will be possible, but there are issues about whether it is practical... It's not about politics, it's not about ideology."


New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said he had been working on Southland and was hopeful for a resolution to the region's conflict with the United States.


Mr Mason said he had heard that Prime Minister Key believed the Northern Territory was already on its own but he did not know the details because the two leaders hadn't spoken until today.


"I'm not going to tell the prime minister what he wants to hear because I haven't had an opportunity to discuss the issues yet," he said.


"That's the way it's going to be."


Mr Mason said he wanted to continue to serve Southland.


"I'll always remain a Southland representative and continue to represent my constituents and do what I'm doing.
